Question about dice?

I asked this question a few weeks ago and got no answers, so here I go again....
In backgammon there is a large dice with the numbers 4, 16, 32, etc on it. What is this dice used for?

That's the doubling cube, used when you're playing for stakes or playing a multiple-point match.

The doubling cube is never rolled. At the start of the game, it's placed with the number 64 face showing, which is assumed to be 1.
Either player may offer to double the value of the game (for the first double) before he rolls the dice for his turn. Once a double has been made, only the player who did not double last may offer a double.
If your opponent offers a double, you must either accept the doubled stake, or refuse it and resign the game (at the undoubled stake).
If the first double is accepted, the cube is turned so that the number 2 is showing, and it is moved to the side of the player who accepted the double. For future doubles, turn the cube so that the next higher number is showing, and move it to the other player's side.
