Backgammon When To Double

My apponent keeps asking to double in backgammon. When I dont accept, the game starts all over! Why???

The Doubling cube (or feature) is similar in concept to a raise in poker. When your opponent presents the option of doubling, he is, in essence, raising the stakes of the game. He is saying, "I believe I will win this game. If you agree, we can just end it now. If not, then, I am so convinced that I will win this game that I will double the stakes." You, then, have the option of agreeing to those terms or forfeiting the game at that point. In poker, when a person raises the stakes, each opposing player has the option of agreeing or folding his hand at that time and forfeiting the hand. Each opposing player does NOT have the option of saying, "I would like to just play this hand out at the current pot value." The same goes for backgammon.

Also, as in poker, you have the option of re-raising your opponent. If you believe YOU have the advantage, you can double his double. The pressure is then put on your opponent to decide if he wants to accept those term or forfeit the game to you at the current (2X) stakes--meaning that your win is worth the originally doubled value of 2 games or twice (2 times) whatever the agreed upon stakes were at the beginning of the game. If he accepts your re-doubled challenge, you are then playing for 4 times the amount of the original table stakes. If he re-doubles your re-double, you have to decide if you want to play for 8 times the original table stakes or forfeit or double him to 16. And so it goes.
